Posted by mcneila | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on December 7, 2015

Today we completed our first hour of code! The students were very excited to make their characters move, turn, jump, and more. Danny, Arieal, and Jocelynn were the first to complete their tasks and received their certificates. So proud of everyone in our class. If you would like to work on hour of code activities from home, go to the website tab at the top of our blog page. I posted the link there. There are things to do on the computer and things you can do without. Have fun.

Celebrating Veteran’s Day

6

Posted by mcneila | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on November 11, 2015

Today we learned about Veteran’s Day and why it is important to celebrate our men and woman in the armed forces. We had a surprise Skype luncheon with my nephew, Josh. He is a veteran of the Air Force. The students enjoyed hearing about his duties, awards, after service opportunities. Please read their blogs and see their reactions to the Skype session and feel free to leave a comment.

Mr. Stevens also sent us a picture of my grandfather’s headstone that shows he was a veteran that fought in World War II in the United States Army. If you have any veterans you are proud of…please put their name and armed force in the comments below (and a picture if you have it)! THANK you to all our service men. We appreciate all you do for us.

Crystal Allen came to visit our school. She shared  how she became a writer and how she starts a story. Then we had the chance to share our writing. It was awesome. Such creative ideas were shared. Now we are writing our stories for the Strikewriter contest. The stories are due Nov. 16th. She shared that we can win a pizza party with her. During the party we will eat, share our writing, and get some feedback on how to make my story better. Also, our story will be published on her page!! I can’t wait to read the stories our class will share! Here is a link to her page. Check it out!

On Friday, we skyped Mrs. Stutts class in Florida. We found out some cool facts about their school and was able to share some interesting facts about our school. Then each class took turns asking questions about the book that we are each reading during the global read aloud. We look forward to connecting with other classrooms as well.

A big thank you to Mrs. Moulton for helping lead our squishy circuits today in science lab. The students were given a power source, wires, fans, buzzers, L.E.D lights, and conductive dough and were asked to create circuits to make things work. Our class loved the exploration time and were very successful in making things work. They had so much fun helping each other and celebrating accomplishments of others. Props on 2 for teamwork!!

Thanks to Donors Choose, Chevron, and an independent donor, our grant has been funded. Our class has received some awesome books that we will record and share with our local and global communities. We are so thankful to have these books and the opportunity to increase our fluency as well as spread literacy to our friends, families, and book buddies everywhere.
